It began in a cold Amsterdam studio
Groenland Sustainable Living was founded by two designers, Aam and Stefan, in an old Amsterdam studio that was beautiful, but difficult to keep warm.
Our studio is in a 19th century building in Amsterdam. High ceilings, old radiators, and plenty of character, but not an easy place to keep warm. Every winter, we realised how much energy we were using to heat the entire studio just to keep the two of us warm.
We wondered: why heat the whole room when what we really wanted was to feel warm ourselves? The idea was simple: warm yourself, not the room. That thought became BOHEM.
Why we made BOHEM
We didn’t want to make just another heated blanket. We wanted to rethink what one could be: something beautiful enough to leave on the sofa, soft enough to live with, and thoughtfully designed down to every detail.
From the soft knitted texture and delicate fringes to the natural linen cord and matte taupe controller, every detail was designed to make warmth feel at home.
Wrap yourself in warmth, with no need to heat your entire home. That is what we call head-to-toe happiness.

From a cold room to a finished blanket
The question
Why heat an entire building to keep two people warm on a sofa? A room takes hours and a great deal of energy to warm. A person takes minutes.
The research
We studied heating technologies, yarns and manufacturing methods, and looked closely at every heated blanket we could find. Almost all of them were made to be put away, not to be seen.
The first prototype
Our first working BOHEM went into daily use in our own homes and with early testers. More than two years later, it is still part of everyday life, working just as it did on the first evening.
The redesign
Soft acrylic yarn in a refined knit with fringes and careful stitching. A flat heating element so warmth spreads evenly and you never feel the technology. Nine warmth levels, an adjustable timer and automatic shut-off, quietly built in.
Today
BOHEM ships plastic-free in a reusable cotton bag inside a recycled carton box, from factories that are audited for labour and environmental standards, with a two-year warranty in the box.
